Not taking a decent sleep can cause conflicts in the relationships. Because sleep disorder makes people tired and irritated. These problems are associated with baby sleep. If a baby may not take sufficient rest how could you!

In this article, I’ll trigger a few mistakes made by new parents unknowingly made to ruin baby sleep.

It is understood that most of us parents love to take our babies to sleep with us in our beds, wishing it’d develop a stronger parent-baby bond. But I’m really sorry to break this down to you, it doesn’t work that way.

Instead, it’s confusing for the baby, and it also can be dangerous. This right here is one of the mistakes parents make which injures their baby sleep.

Though, leaving the baby alone in its bed isn’t also the right way to deal with baby sleep. Infant sleep studies show that about 20%–30% of all infants experience night awakenings throughout their first 2 years of life.

6 Parent Mistakes to avoid for Better Baby Sleep

We here at Reshapify want all the babies in the world to have a happy and sound sleep. So below are 6 mistakes that parents make which ruin baby sleep and how to fix them.

1. Not Understanding Baby’s Sleep Cues

These baby sleep cues differ from babies to babies. Your child might develop his own sleep cues to let you know when he’s tired and needs a nap.

It’s important to know that a young baby mustn’t have long periods of wake time during the day. Babies tend to sleep a lot. They sleep so much that you might even get worried if it’s going longer than normal sleeping time.

It is because his brain and body are growing so rapidly that they need to rest more often. It is usual for a baby to be ready for a nap only after 30 minutes of being awake.

What Sleep Cues you must have a look at:
  • Less Movement, still or calming
  • Yawning
  • Thumb or finger sucking
  • Jerky movements
  • Grunting and frowning
  • Less socially responsive or disinterested with surroundings
  • Weaker sucking

2. Not having a Bedtime Routine

baby sleep

When your baby starts growing in an older kid, it’s really important for you to establish a bedtime routine. A healthy bedtime routine is very important for your baby.

And it’s even crucial to stick to a definite schedule so that your baby learns when it’s time to go to bed. Not having a bedtime routine is just gonna cause sleep deficiency or irregular sleeping system which is as bad as it sounds.

So just create a sleeping schedule for you and your kid and follow it. Your baby will eventually get used to going to sleep at the same time and also will start falling asleep faster.

3. Not using a Sound Machine

Out of all the baby sleep mistakes, this right here is the easiest one to fix. You just need to get a sound machine.

A sound machine is literally the easiest way to help your baby sleep better at day or night or at any time you want him to sleep. What exactly do sound machines to do help?

They neutralize all the noises that are in your home and produce soft sounds that remind babies of their time & comfort in the womb. This really comforts them.

Other than that, most of your pure headaches like tip-toeing around all day and making very slow movements so that you don’t startle your baby awake would end.

Plus, the baby would eventually learn that he needs to sleep whenever “that sound” plays. So it’s great to add a sound machine in your baby’s daily sleep routine.

Just in case if you’re wondering, this is my favorite sound machine. Why? Check it out:
  • It combines nightlight, sound machine, and time-to-rise alert in one easy-to-use device that you can control from your phone!
  • It grows with your child’s needs – providing soft light and white noise for midnight newborn feeding sessions, the comfort of a nightlight for a preschooler, plus a time-to-rise setting for your older child! Includes toddler lock feature and stays cool throughout the night for safety.

4. Not Feeding Baby Enough During the Day

If you think “not disturbing your baby’s sleep when you need to feed him” is a good idea. You’re probably going through the 4th mistake out of 6 parent mistakes that ruin baby sleep.

I shouldn’t have used the word “disturbing” above, but it’s on top of my head. Anyway, many parents allow their babies to sleep surprisingly long ranges during the day without feeding.

That is so not a good thing. If your baby does not eat at least every 2-3 hours during the day, he’ll wake up more often at night to throw a tantrum.

In the first two weeks, you might even need to wake your newborn up to eat since it’s recommended that newborns eat every 2-3 hours a day to recover naturally lost weight since delivery.

Why is this mistake so important to fix?

Out of all the baby sleep mistakes, this one has the biggest impact on night wakings. If you’re a little busier during the day and couldn’t feed him, your baby is gonna need those “calories” which will simply cause him to wake more often at night.

If your baby constantly eats during the evening hours or late afternoon, it is ideally normal behavior and actually great for sleep.

5. Putting your Baby to Sleep in a Lit Room

10 Mistakes Parents Make That Are Ruining Their Baby’s Sleep

Another mistake that parents make is put their baby in a lit room for sleep. If you think that – “babies learn to distinguish between day and night if you put them in a well-lit room for sleep during day time”, you’re wrong.

Darkness is equally as important as light is for your child. In fact, it has a calming influence on babies, plus it encourages the production of melatonin (a hormone that helps to regulate sleep).

6. Switching from a crib to a bed too early

Whether there’s another baby on the way or your baby has outgrown their crib, you shouldn’t make the mistake of moving your child to a bed to soon.

It’s normal to move a child to a bed between 18 – 24 months, but any time sooner than this is a rash decision (and a bad one). An early moving to a bed can be confusing and uncomfortable for babies.

You might even wake up to them wandering around the house in the middle of the night since they are used to the boundaries of a crib and it’s difficult for them to control themselves.

The perfect time to switch your child to a bed is when he starts climbing out of the crib successfully. Above that, it is even better to move them to a bed if you’re potty training your baby.

Bonus Mistake that ruins baby sleep:

Soundproofing your baby’s resting area and making it too silent. If your baby gets comfortable at sleeping in a pure silent environment, he might have difficulty later.

So it is hardly recommended for you to use a white sound machine so that it never is “all silence”. This “Rest Sound Machine” is the best one you can find.
